2020 Coolest Spaces.jpg

The Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex, York Central Market, and the 1741 Club were recently recognized by the Central Penn Business Journal. Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects did design work on all three of them.

From the CPBJ:

“Central Pennsylvania is home to hundreds of cool spaces—from breathtaking architecture to cutting-edge design to repurposed buildings being used in new and different ways. The Central Penn Business Journal asked you to share your favorites and we received dozens of nominations. Our editors selected these 30 coolest spaces to showcase in the March 27th edition of the Central Penn Business Journal and on CPBJ.com.”

York Central Market

There was a time not long ago when the future of York’s iconic Central Market House was in question.

“There’s no denying it: Central Market was in decline,” says Frank E. Dittenhafer II, FAIA, LEED AP of Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects.

Dittenhafer, who is currently serving his final term with Central Market’s board of directors, recalls the struggles the group faced when he joined the Board in the mid-2000s. It was an opportunity for Dittenhafer to give of his time, but also for Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects to have a hand in a much-needed transformation of the building.

1741 Club, PeoplesBank Park

For York Revolution President Eric Menzer, fielding a winning team starts with hiring smart baseball people.

The same strategy applies to designing an entirely new club space for the stadium and downtown York: hire talented architects.

“I admit, I initially thought we could re-do the White Rose Room into the new 1741 Club ourselves, but my theory was wrong,” he says of the newly opened venue in Peoples Bank Park. “It’s very clear to me the outcome from Murphy & Dittenhafer is immensely better than we could have done ourselves.”
